    Andrews AFB

The military history of Andrews AFB began in the 1850's during the Civil War when Union troops occupied a small country church near Camp Springs, Md., as sleeping quarters. At present, the same church is used on the base and is known as Chapel Two.

Established first as Camp Springs Army Air Field, Andrews' history began 25 Aug 1941, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote a letter to the secretary of war directing the use of the land on which the base now stands. Located 10 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., in Prince George's County, Md., the base was under construction during the remainder of 1942 and became operational May 2, 1943, with the arrival of the first Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. The name of the base was changed to Andrews Field 31 Mar 1945, in honor of LtGen Frank M. Andrews, commander of European operations for all Army Air Forces. The year 1947 marked the arrival of the first permanently assigned jet powered aircraft, the F-80 Shooting Star, at Andrews.

In July, 1961 Andrews became the home of the official presidential aircraft, known as "Air Force One" when the president is on board. In 1963, the Naval Air Facility (NAF), originally established at Anacostia in 1919, moved to Andrews. The NAF handles Naval VIP flight operations and is home for a Marine Corps detachment that flies the FA-18 Hornet. Coast Guard Air Station Washington DC occupies space at Andrews AFB. Andrews AFB has evolved to become one of the most modern bases in the Air Force.

    Clinton, Maryland

Founded in the 1770's by the Surratt family, then named Surratt's Villa, was a simple crossroads with a few buildings. The village was later called SURRATTSVILLE, likely after the Surratt family who also ran a tavern, which served also as the post office and polling place. Later the town was called ROBEYSTOWN, after the Robey family who owned the property. In 1878, however, the Post Office took on the name of CLINTON. It's believed after Mary Surratt was hanged for possible involvement in the Lincoln assassination the community wanted to get away from the notoriety of its association with her. Exactly how the name Clinton was selected is uncertain. The local high school retains the name of Surrattsville, and local historians have continually urged Clinton to retake its original name. Clinton is not an incorporated municipality.

    Prince Goeorge's County

After heavy exploration and colonization by Captain John Smith and settlers from England and continental Europe, Prince George's County was named for Prince George of Denmark when it was officially established in 1696. Prince George's vast wilderness provided lumber while its many navigable rivers such as the Potomac and the Patuxent, as well as the Chesapeake Bay, offered shipping and trading opportunities. The county quickly became the jewel of the new world. Although many of the original Prince George's establishments remained small, Upper Marlboro and Bladensburg grew into major centers of political activity and commerce. and culture.

John Hanson, first president of the United States under the Articles of Confederation, made his home in Prince George's County, while John Carroll, the first archbishop of the United States, was born in the county seat Upper Marlborough, later shortened to Upper Marlboro. It was from the northwest corner of expansive Prince George's County that a portion of land was ceded by the state of Maryland to the federal government to establish Washington, D.C. Prince George's County now covers 487 square miles and borders Washington D.C. on the East and is just 37 miles south of Baltimore, just minutes from the political, social and cultural life of Washington, D.C. and from the many pleasures of Annapolis, the Eastern Shore and the neighboring Cumberland mountain areas. Prince George's County holds over 300 years of history and a diversity of landscapes and lifestyles unique in the Washington metropolitan area.
