In 1861 President Buchanan signed a Congressional Bill which created the Territory of Nevada. On March 2nd,
just two days later, Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th President of the U. S. Lincoln didn’t hesitate to
create the Territorial government, and assigned a political supporter, and friend James Nye of New York as
Territorial Governor. An act of November 25th, 1861 made Carson City the permanent seat of the new territory.
In the autumn of 1861, shortly after the completion of the Warm Springs Hotel, the first Territorial
